Discover this original silkscreen print by José de Guimarães from the Hong Kong Series. 1997. The artwork depicts a powerful, anthropomorphic red figure in a primal pose characteristic of the artist’s “visual alphabet.”
Against a yellow and black background, blue and gray Chinese calligraphy from classical poetry is interwoven around the red silhouette. For José de Guimarães, these scripts are not merely texts, but veritable sacred drawings. They unite universal primal energy with the memory of a great civilization.
The black markings add a mythological dimension: on the right, a figure evokes a dragon approaching with its claws, while other forms suggest ghostly faces. This dialogue between the vibrant red figure (a symbol of life and generative force) and the black dragon reinforces the theme of cultural clash and the effervescence of Hong Kong at the time of its handover.
