Discover this silkscreen print “Hong Kong IV” by José de Guimarães, a contemporary Portuguese artist, dated 1998. This work is part of his series inspired by his travels in Asia, blending abstract forms with authentic Chinese calligraphy imbued with meaning. Composed of flat areas of vibrant color (bright red, ochre yellow, touches of green) and sinuous black lines on a splashed white background, it reveals several interwoven profiles and faces, as well as a large open red hand in the lower left corner, a symbol of communication, peace, and human connection. The Chinese characters evoke the passage of time, the seasons, the coolness of evening, and classical poems imbued with melancholy and contemplation. Unsigned. Dimensions (no white border): 25.98 x 18.89 inches (66 x 48 cm). Very good condition (minor stain on the back in one corner, without affecting the image). Rare limited edition.
This unsigned silkscreen print retains all its graphic power and symbolic richness. José de Guimarães blends Asian (calligraphy) and African (protective gestures) influences. The dynamic composition, with splashes, colored circles, and fluid lines, makes it a striking piece from his Asian period.
– Composition: Controlled splashes and drips, circles and organic shapes, multiple faces, a sinuous blue line at the top, and a small element evoking a stylized vehicle in the lower right.
– Dominant colors: Intense red, yellow/orange, emerald green, blue, black, and white.
– Style: A perfect fusion of Asian calligraphy, lyrical abstraction, and the African tribal influences so dear to the artist.
The calligraphy is not random: it incorporates classical Chinese poems and expressions related to nature and the passage of time.
