A French ceramicist couple from Vallauris. Originally from Nice, the Thiry family settled in the famous pottery village of Vallauris in 1943. After studying at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Nice, Albert Thiry continued his training as an intern in various pottery workshops, including Saltalamacchia, Sagan, and Charles Voltz. Returning from the Algerian War in 1956, in Vallauris, he worked as a decorator for six years with Claire and René Batigne, who ran the Tapis Vert workshop, and rubbed shoulders with Marcel Vertès and Anton Prinner who introduced him to sculpture. That same year (1956), before leaving for Algeria, he married Pyot Gavaudan (1933, born in Eygalières), who worked at the Giraud workshops as a decorator and model maker, after having attended the School of Decorative Arts in Nice (1953) and having worked at the Concarneau workshop.
