Théodore Rousseau (1812–1867) was a major landscape painter, leader of the Barbizon school. A precursor of Impressionism, he revolutionized landscape painting in the 19th century by painting outdoors. His work, marked by a romantic naturalism and a defense of the Fontainebleau forest, combines rigorous observation with intense emotions.
