Théodore Rousseau: catalogue raisonné of the painted work, 1812-1867 (book) by Michel Schulman with the collaboration of Marie Bataillès and Virginie Sérafino. Editions de l’Amateur. 1999. New hardcover book in shrink wrap. In French.

Admired but also criticized during his lifetime, Théodore Rousseau ranks among the great masters of 19th-century French painting. Breaking with classical tradition, his work had never been the subject of a catalogue raisonné. Michel Schulman fills this gap with the Catalogue Raisonné of his painted works. He thus does justice to an artist whose complexity, variety, and originality are fully revealed. This book should restore Théodore Rousseau to his rightful place as a landscape painter and precursor of Impressionism.

This is a very comprehensive reference work (catalogue raisonné) on the French landscape painter Théodore Rousseau, a major figure of the Barbizon school.. He systematically catalogues and documents all his known paintings, with descriptions, provenances, exhibitions, etc.Théodore Rousseau is known for his realistic and pre-Impressionist landscapes of the Fontainebleau forest. He played an important role in the renewal of landscape painting in the 19th century, breaking with academicism.
The book is a tool primarily intended for art historians, experts, collectors, and art dealers (large and heavy format, approximately 380 pages, numerous illustrations). It is the volume devoted to paintings (there is also a volume on his graphic work, for sale separately on our website).
