Pablo Picasso settled in the South of France. In 1946, at the “Pottery, Flowers, Perfumes” exhibition at the Nérolium, the Vallauris farmers’ market, Picasso met the Ramié family, creators and owners of the Madoura workshop. They invited him to work with clay in their studio. In 1947, Picasso returned to Vallauris to admire his ceramics once they had been fired. Captivated, he remained at the workshop until 1971, after a period of prolific production. Indeed, the Cubist artist became a ceramist and created more than 3,600 ceramic pieces, some of which were produced in editions of between 25 and 500. Madoura thus became the exclusive publisher of Picasso’s ceramic creations: vases, plates, dishes, and pitchers.
